We the parents have to start first. We are dying from diet-related diseases unecessarily and it will be worse for our kids as they grow up. We are responsible for our children, it's our responsiblity to lead by example and teach them the right way. They don't know any better, that's why they have parents

I am a teacher in DC Public Schools and my school is about 95% free and reduced lunch. My students (grades PreSchool-8)do not get a choice as to which foods they are getting, they just walk through the line and get a tray of food (which is typically not the most appetizing looking). After they get their tray and are at the tables they usually eat what they want and throw the rest away. How do we get them to eat the healthy foods which are just given to them? I love the idea of the unique names, however they don't see options so it would be hard for them to see the names. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks,
Jenny

This message goes to Iris, two comments below. It doesnt matter what you think to be quite hoenst. If you have the attitude that YOU dont think something will work, it wont (i.e. something is attractive). You have to set high expectations and make changes = THE NORM! When kids expect something and know that 'thats how its going to be' then they accept it. As adults, we have to practice what we preach, WE have to help make sustainable changes and listen, learn and be open to what our students need and want and then find a happy medium.

No offense, but kids know these stuff, and I think that they will see through them. I mean, some kids don't like to eat healthy food, and just because the fruits are in a basket (which isnt really attractive) doesn't really make it more appealing, in my opinion. no offense, but this is my opinion.

LaConner School District has, over the last six years, put in place the following: we make our own salad dressings from scratch, controlling salt, sugars and the right fat, we limit our fats to butter, canola oil and olive oil, we bake many items from scratch, we serve many entree style, not ala carte, meals, our entrees are made from scratch, we use real cheeses, not over precessed cheeses. No American cheese. We have an awesome salad bar full of different greens and fresh vegetables. We have fruit bowls every day for that extra serving of fruit.
Next year we will limit our beverages to 1% milk, lactose free milk, fruit juice only orange and apple juices and water. We have also bought our first beef, two cows that live down the road in a pasture. They will be processed by a butcher in a USDA inspected plant not far from here. We won't have to worry about unknown meat processed by people who don't care about us. Thank you so much for your interest and concerns and this great website. This is a great start for many schools.

At our high school we opened a cafe in the Library. Run by library staff, but funded by the lunchroom. We offer healthier choices. Lots of fruit and string cheese, cliff bars. The teachers and the students love it.

We provide ERP software to companies that distribute produce and other perishable goods to schools and other organizations in food service and retail. I am working with distributors to print the ideas from this website on the delivery documentation (invoices, bills of lading, etc.) so the people managing the lunch programs will see these suggestions at lease once a week when they get deliveries. If you are reading this and have the ability to influence your distributor to print this information on their delivery documents it will help both the distributors and the children.

I just saw the CNN video about re-naming school lunches. i.e. - "Big, Bad Bean Burrito" instead of just plain old "bean burrito". See? That is brilliant! It's basically marketing...and if you do it right, it shouldn't be too hard to convince them that good food is fun! I'm a graphic designer/illustrator and think that redirecting the message by adding visuals to these lunches would boost enthusiasm for kids at lunch time! I also think that rewarding kids for eating healthy would be a good idea as well...maybe give them a sticker at the end of the lunch line. This is just an idea that I am proposing and feel very passionately about. I'm willing to dedicate my time to help out in this way.

Faithfully Fresh is a popular in-school "market" that offers healthy food choices to students & faculty. Located in Pennsylvania, students at area schools are free to visit the "market" and select fresh fruit, vegetable snacks such as carrot sticks, and a variety of yogurts, juices, water, trail mix etc. Most items are sold for less than one dollar. What makes this program so popular is that the students are able to make their own choices from a selection of items not usually seen at their neighborhood convenience or "corner" store or are too expensive to buy. Students should have a say when what they eat, not parents or schools. After all, they aren't the ones eating it.

Hello there,

I am writing to you as a fellow comrade in the fight for better food in America and stronger nutrition education in schools. I am a certified nutritionist and school food specialist. I have developed a very innovative nutrition education program, Veggiecation, that ties classroom lessons to mealtime experiences with the mission to empower children to learn about, taste and love vegetables. This program realized great success in the pilots we launched in some of NYC's finest independent schools and has been adopted by schools in California, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

I thought you might be interested in the work we are doing. You can learn more about it here: www.veggiecation.com
I also wanted to commend your organization for fantastic efforts! Keep up the great work!

Sincerely,
Lisa Suriano

i think that kids should have the choice of how they want to eat. At schools, they should be able to have a like, junk cart that goes around at lunch, and if you want to eat that way, then you should have to pay for it yourself. it should not be counted as your lunch money that you have, or have free lunch you should not be able to use it, you should have to pay the money out of you pocket. if you are willing to pay for rotting your teeth out, go for it(:

When I was in school, there was a junk-food cart that was in the hallway easy to grab something between classes, or during breaks. It was stocked with easy to see cookies, huge rice crispy treats, things like that.

How hard would it be for kids to have a 'prepay' card connected to their already existing student ID? They could fill up this card online (parents could charge it up) and then at school they could use this at a cart like the one I talked about, but this one has fruits, veggies, whole grain options, juices, milk, etc. Basically you go up, get what you want, and swipe and go. Keep the junkfood ones using cash and the lines longer so that it limits how many kids can be served, but make the healthy carts easier, and more cool, to use.
